Inner Explorer’s enhanced Tune In feature is the perfect way for schools to share the gift of mindfulness with families during this incredibly challenging school year. It’s now easy for parents and caregivers to access Tune In from the Inner Explorer @Home app. When a teacher has an Inner Explorer account, the adults at home can register for the same mindfulness sessions that their children hear at school.
When parents sign up for Tune In, they receive a notification each day the classroom teacher presses “Play” - with the option to listen in real-time or at a time of their choosing. Tune In offers families the same benefits of mindfulness that students are experiencing in the classroom – reduced stress, improved focus, and increased overall well-being. Additionally, practicing mindfulness together can foster connection and conversation at home.
We know that engaging families in what’s happening at school is a critical ingredient to student success. By employing a 2Generation approach between school and home through Tune In, Inner Explorer aims to get at the root of societal challenges like poverty, homelessness, suicide, violence, and substance abuse, all of which disproportionately affect people of color. Inner Explorer’s Mindfulness Based Social-Emotional Learning (MBSEL) program trains educators, students, and families to first understand themselves, their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, and then to develop healthy habits of the mind that support their goals. Through practicing Inner Explorer’s daily mindfulness practice in school, children develop a capacity to be in stillness, to be self-aware, emotionally regulated, creative, and open. These positive and noticeable changes propel “their adults” (parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, teachers, mentors) to become curious and want to participate too!
Tune In creates a self-strengthening cycle where teachers, students, and extended families all motivate each other through their shared experience: Teachers experience less stress and become more effective; students improve their academic performance, develop critical social-emotional skills and adopt healthier behaviors; while multigenerational families and entire communities are strengthened due to the increasing sense of collaboration and interconnectedness. This 2Generation approach instills the practice of mindfulness, making it more likely that a daily habit will form and stick. This is a foundational step in the effort to enrich communities. It may be one of the most impactful social justice and education equity initiatives of our time
